Toyota Corolla is one of the most renowned compact cars produced by the Japanese automotive giant, and the revamped version is now being sold as new Corolla Altis.
It is one of the best sellers in company’s lineup, produced internationally since 1966.
In 1997, it became the best selling compact car and more than 35 million cars were sold by the end of year 2007.
The 9th generation was launched during November 2000.
This model was labeled as the Altis in the ASIAN region, whereas the station wagon version was labeled as Corolla Fielder.

The current engines are designed using the super CVT-I technology with a 7-speed Sequential Sport Shift, which enhances the fuel economy. With the help of Sequential Shift, the driver can use the transmission lever with immense driving pleasure, and new gearbox 6MT is yet another enhancement for 2010.

Now let’s take a look at various generations of the Altis.
2005 Altis

2005 Altis was one of the best-selling sedans during the year 2005. It was equipped with a 4-cylinder inline 1ZZ-FE engine, which could generate 17.3 kgm at 4200 rpm and 132 ps of power at 6000 rpm.
The engine was designed with 1794 cc, 91.5mm stroke, and 79mm bore, and an instrument pod. The display cluster illuminated upon turning on the ignition, giving a royal look to the interiors.
2005 Corolla Altis was equipped with warning signals, an audio alarm, and steering controls for ICE & MID. The ICE package comprised of six speakers and six CD changer along with aux in & remote.
The vehicle had plenty of cubby holes and two cup holders along with two storage cabins twin glove box. The car was electrically foldable & adjustable with turn indicators. It had fog lamps and alloy wheels.
Altis 2007 Edition
In late 2006, Altis 2007 edition was rolled out in the market, which had minor modifications over its predecessor.
Coming to mechanics of this vehicle, the vehicle had two engine choices; 1.6L and 1.8L engines. The 1.8L 2ZR-FV dual VVT-I engine could develop 140hp of power.
The engine was provided with a Continuously Variable Transmission in few markets, while it was coupled to five speed manual transmission, and the four speed automatic gearbox was optional.
2008 Altis
2008 Corolla Altis was the tenth generation in Corolla lineup. The engines have been famous for their efficiency and refinement, and a new dual VVT-I technology was introduced for 2008 Corolla Altis engines.
For 2008, the engines choices included 1.8 liter 2ZR-FE and 1.6 liter 1ZR-FE. The 1.6 variant delivered 124 hp, whereas the throughput was about 140 hp in case of 1.8L engine.
New Altis 2010

Toyota-Astra Motor launched the facelifted version as the Grand New Corolla Altis. This year, the vehicle was enhanced with considerable changes, which were primarily associated with transmission and engine sectors.
For the current year also, the new Toyota Altis is produced with a 1.8-liter engine (2ZR-FE) and the 2.0 liter engine (3ZR-FE); both engines are powered by the dual VVT-i technology. The exhaust are computerized and the valve opening mechanism is also controlled by the dual VVT-I technology.
Corolla Engine
Earlier, these vehicle had 2 engine choices- 1.6-L and 1.8-L FE with not more than 110hp output. As emission laws changed, horsepower figures increased slightly.
The addition of 1ZZ-FE engine substantially generated more power and fuel economy with cleaner burning of fuel.
The new ZZ aluminum block engine used common iron cylinder liners that allowed greater precision in construction. It had fairly long stroke and heads were designed to offer knock resistance.
In 2003, there was major improvement in the engine specs though the added weight and horsepower was just 5hp, making it total 130 and 125 pound-feet of torque.
In 2006, the automaker added advanced version of 1.8-L engine, where the gas mileage was improved a bit. The new Corolla edition has just 132hp 1.8-L 4-cylinder engine, which is significantly underpowered when compared to its competitors.
Corolla engine and transmission options have to be changed in order to offer better driving experience.
